Kenya has reported its first confirmed death from the Ebola virus after a citizen who had been residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo succumbed to the illness in Nairobi, health authorities announced.

Health Minister Aden Duale confirmed the case, explaining that the deceased had been living across the border in DR Congo for seven years. According to officials, the individual became sick roughly four weeks ago and sought medical care at multiple health facilities in DR Congo prior to traveling back to Kenya.

The traveler took an inbound flight on Saturday, passing through standard health screening protocols upon arrival at Nairobi's primary international airport. Following his arrival, a family member assisted in transporting him directly to a medical facility in the capital city, where he died several days later. Subsequent laboratory evaluations verified that the patient was infected with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.

The fatal case in Kenya comes amid an ongoing health emergency in neighboring DR Congo, which has been grappling with an intense resurgence of the disease. Over 4,000 individuals have lost their lives to Ebola in DR Congo throughout the current year, marking the present wave as the second deadliest documented outbreak in history.

Health authorities in the region monitor such cross-border transmissions closely, as the rapid movement of infected individuals poses serious containment challenges. Officials have not yet detailed the extent of contact tracing efforts underway following the patient's flight and subsequent hospital stay in Nairobi.
