Four relatives of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro have secured legislative victories alongside a major breakthrough for his eldest son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who finished ahead in the initial round of the nation's presidential vote, according to The Guardian. The outcome advances the conservative senator to a head-to-head runoff against the current leftist president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, while cementing the Bolsonaro household as an entrenched political force.

The former president, who is presently confined to house arrest following a conviction related to an attempted coup, watched his relatives claim high-profile offices across the national legislature. While family members have participated in public life for decades, the latest balloting delivered them notably more influential positions in Brasília.

Former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro secured a seat in the Senate during her debut campaign for elected office, splitting time on the trail with tending to her husband. She was joined by the former president's second son, Carlos Bolsonaro, who also gained a Senate seat after serving a quarter-century in the Rio de Janeiro municipal legislature. Carlos had previously overseen his father’s digital operations and faced an indictment from federal authorities concerning an online network accused of circulating falsehoods and targeting political rivals.

Further expanding the clan's legislative footprint, Jair Renan Valle Bolsonaro moved up from a local council seat to win a position in the lower house of the national congress, appearing on ballot papers simply under the name Jair Bolsonaro. Even the former president's brother, Renato Bolsonaro, won a congressional seat, overcoming a history of seven consecutive losses in local races. Renato experienced a dramatic surge in support, rising from under 10,000 ballots in a municipal contest two years prior to 380,000 votes in the federal race.

The wave of victories occurred even without the presence of another prominent son, Eduardo Bolsonaro. The former lawmaker relocated to the United States after stepping down from his congressional seat, spending more than a year advocating in circles linked to Donald Trump. Meanwhile, Jair Bolsonaro's former wife, Rogéria Bolsonaro, lost her bid for a state-level legislative post.

Flávio Bolsonaro outperformed his father's previous first-round vote counts from 2018 and 2022. Analysts noted that the turnout partly reflected an anti-incumbent sentiment aimed directly at Lula rather than exclusive devotion to the senator.

Internal family relations have not been without friction. During the run-up to the vote, Michelle Bolsonaro publicly complained of being mistreated and demeaned by Flávio, prompting an open apology from the presidential candidate. Though she accepted the gesture, the two avoided appearing together on the trail. Despite those tensions, Michelle has emerged as a particularly influential figure on the Brazilian right, possessing strong appeal among evangelical communities through her religious background and public presence.

The family's combined electoral momentum also propelled broader wins for their political vehicle, the Liberal Party, which is slated to form the dominant voting bloc in the incoming congress. Political observers observed that even though the dynasty has participated in governance for generations, substantial portions of the electorate still view the family as an anti-establishment force capable of upending traditional power structures in the capital.
