The death toll from a Russian air assault on an aid distribution facility in southeastern Ukraine has reached 40, according to Ukrainian officials. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the updated casualty figures on Wednesday, warning that the number of fatalities could climb further because more than 30 individuals are suspected to still be trapped beneath the wreckage.

The bombardment struck the frontline village of Komyshuvakha, located in the Zaporizhia region. Russian forces dropped multiple guided aerial bombs on a local school building that was functioning as a humanitarian center for distributing relief supplies. According to Ukrainian authorities, a subsequent strike hit a subterranean bunker where civilians had rushed for protection.

Emergency responders and law enforcement personnel were among those killed in the incident. Officials stated that four police officers and two rescue workers lost their lives. Video captured by a body camera worn by one of the deceased officers showed civilians being directed into the underground shelter following an alert about incoming munitions, moments before the footage went dark.

Search and recovery operations at the site have faced serious obstacles. Regional officials reported that ongoing Russian drone activity in the area has repeatedly disrupted the efforts of emergency teams. Despite the danger, Mykhailo Semikin, the acting head of the regional military administration, confirmed that rescue personnel are persisting with the search.

The attack stands as one of the deadliest civilian-casualty incidents in the prolonged conflict. The United Nations human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine stated that the bombing likely constituted a breach of international legal standards. Zelenskyy condemned the strike, arguing it demonstrated that Moscow lacks any real desire to de-escalate the fighting. He expressed frustration at what he characterized as an insufficient global reaction, urging international partners to deliver a decisive response to the attack.

The tragedy occurred just days before planned diplomatic discussions aimed at negotiating an end to the hostilities. United States-mediated talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives are scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11, overseen by US special envoy Steve Witkoff. Those discussions are intended to address humanitarian issues, potential de-escalation, and post-war security arrangements. However, expectations remain subdued, as previous negotiations have failed to overcome Moscow's demands that Kyiv relinquish sovereign territory and renounce future membership in NATO.
