Yoon Suk Yeol receives suspended prison sentence from appellate court in election case

A South Korean appellate court has affirmed a suspended prison term for former President Yoon Suk Yeol for breaching election regulations, Yonhap reported. The decision carries significant financial consequences for the nation's principal opposition party.
On Wednesday, the Seoul High Court sustained the initial verdict against Yoon, which imposed an 18-month prison sentence suspended for three years. The case centers on allegations that Yoon made untruthful assertions while campaigning as the presidential candidate of the People Power Party ahead of his victory at the polls in March 2022.
The legal ruling exposes the People Power Party to substantial liability regarding public election financing. Under South Korean election statutes, should Yoon's sentence be permanently finalized with either incarceration or a financial penalty reaching or exceeding 1 million won, his 2022 victory would be retroactively invalidated.
Consequently, such a final judgment would legally obligate the People Power Party to surrender and repay the 39.7 billion won, roughly 30 million dollars, that the government had reimbursed to cover its official presidential campaign expenditures.
The decision represents another major legal hurdle for the former South Korean leader following a string of separate trials and judicial actions following his departure from executive office.
