British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Downing Street on Wednesday, reaffirming the United Kingdom's long-term military and diplomatic backing.

The meeting comes amid renewed friction between Kyiv and Donald Trump, who recently agreed to purchase Russian diesel, suggested Ukraine should seek new leadership, and claimed an energy-related ceasefire was in place—a statement Zelenskyy said caught him entirely by surprise.

Ahead of the talks, Burnham stated that Britain's backing remained unwavering and vital for collective European security, promising that the UK would stand alongside Ukraine for as long as necessary.

To reinforce that message, Downing Street announced plans to accelerate deliveries under an existing 1.6-billion-pound defence package. The shipments include more than 5,000 British-manufactured lightweight multi-role missiles designed to assist Ukrainian forces in shooting down advanced Russian jet-powered drones. These newer drones fly faster and reach higher altitudes than older propeller-driven models, posing a heightened threat to urban centres, including Kyiv.

British officials are also coordinating diplomatic pressure on Moscow's energy revenues. Burnham's government plans to campaign for a global ban on maritime services supporting Russian liquefied natural gas exports. Chancellor John Healey is scheduled to advocate for the restriction during discussions at the International Monetary Fund summit in Bangkok.

Wednesday's discussions mark the third face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Burnham assumed the premiership in July. Their earlier engagements included a July meeting at a Portsmouth naval base and Burnham's trip to Kyiv in August, which served as his maiden foreign visit as prime minister.

London has repeatedly positioned itself as a dependable partner for Ukraine during periods of diplomatic tension with Washington. A year and a half ago, former Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles hosted Zelenskyy in the UK immediately following a contentious Oval Office exchange involving Trump and Vice-President JD Vance.

Zelenskyy has recently voiced sharp criticism over Trump's diesel agreement, arguing that subsequent strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine reflected renewed confidence in Moscow. British officials hope the accelerated military aid and diplomatic push will bolster Ukrainian defences as Russian aerial barrages intensify across the country.
