North Korea has instructed front-line soldiers to respond with decisive force if their security is endangered by South Korean military activities, official state media reported on Wednesday. The directive elevates concerns about potential skirmishes across one of the most fortified borders in the world.

The announcement follows warnings from authorities in Seoul, who pledged the previous day to strongly counter any hostile acts should Pyongyang follow through on plans to bolster its military deployment along the boundary line. Both nations remain on high alert amid an increasingly adversarial posture across the frontier.

According to the North Korean state news outlet KCNA, senior military official Marshal Pak Jong Chon conducted an inspection of defensive positions along the frontier on Tuesday. He was accompanied during the visit by Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

During the visit, Kim Yo Jong stated that freshly deployed artillery and firepower divisions had successfully assumed their designated combat positions along the border area, state media reported.

Frictions between the neighboring nations have intensified steadily since April 2024, when Pyongyang initiated a project to strengthen defensive barriers and fortifications along the divide. The Korean peninsula has remained divided since fighting concluded in the 1953 Korean War with a ceasefire agreement rather than a formal peace treaty, leaving both sides technically separated by the Demilitarized Zone.

Meanwhile, North Korean state media separately published images of leader Kim Jong Un attending a national light industry exhibition for clothing and footwear in Pyongyang alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae. The domestic appearance coincided with the latest round of military rhetoric directed toward South Korea.
