Newly obtained footage shows Iran attack on major U.S. post in Kuwait
CBS News obtained new video from a person on the ground showing an Iranian attack on a U.S. base at the beginning of the war.

Newly surfaced video recordings show intense Iranian barrages against Camp Buehring, a key American military outpost in Kuwait, during the opening phase of the war seven months ago, according to a CBS News report. The recordings, captured by a military member stationed on the installation, illustrate direct detonations, destroyed infrastructure, and battered hardware caused by incoming drones, ballistic missiles, and aircraft.
Camp Buehring, located approximately 25 miles from the border with Iraq, has long operated as a major transit and staging hub for American personnel deploying across the region. Prior to the onset of hostilies, the Department of Defense repositioned the vast majority of the 7,000 troops based there to reduce vulnerability to hostile strikes, a strategy officials described as moving forces out of target range.
However, more than 100 soldiers remained at the facility to maintain operations and defense. Service members on site faced incoming missile barrages and drone strikes, with multiple witnesses recounting low-altitude attacks carried out by Iranian F-5 combat jets. Eyewitness accounts provided to CBS News indicated that defense personnel ran dangerously low on defensive supplies, including .50-caliber rounds, sparking fears that the facility could not survive prolonged bombardment or handle extensive casualties.
Due to ammunition shortages and escalating bombardment, remaining forces eventually evacuated the installation under the cover of darkness. Troops loaded equipment into tactical vehicles and relocated deep into the Udari Desert, setting up makeshift forward operating outposts. No service members died from direct hostile munitions at the base, but several suffered injuries during the deployment. In late April, a severe lightning strike during a desert storm injured two service members, leaving one with burns and another with a ruptured eardrum before the units were shifted to Camp Arifjan in May.
U.S. Central Command declined to comment on the footage or the specific events at the post. The Pentagon referred back to previous remarks made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in March, when he stated that more than 90 percent of American personnel had been relocated off exposed bases to protect them from Iranian strikes as offensive capabilities were assembled.
The newly released clips provide rare visual confirmation of the extensive scale of damage sustained by regional installations. A recent inspector general report submitted to Congress disclosed that Iranian attacks across the Middle East have resulted in up to $3.7 billion in U.S. equipment losses, spanning facilities across Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and several neighboring nations. Independent evaluations by the Congressional Research Service noted that dozens of aircraft and unmanned aerial systems have been destroyed or damaged since fighting erupted earlier this year.
