Indian authorities on Wednesday took opposition figure Rahul Gandhi into custody in New Delhi as he participated in demonstrations demanding the step-down of the nation's chief election commissioner. The incident marked the third time in two days that Gandhi has been detained amid intensifying demonstrations over updates to the national voter rolls.

Police intervened as Gandhi, joined by fellow opposition politicians, marched toward Jantar Mantar, a recognized gathering point for demonstrations in the capital. Video broadcast on the Congress Party's YouTube channel showed officers guiding Gandhi into a police van before moving him away from the scene. Several other opposition lawmakers and demonstrators were taken into custody during the gathering.

The unrest centers on widespread changes made by the Election Commission of India, which has purged over 130 million individuals from official voter registries. Millions of affected citizens have submitted appeals against the deletions. Opponents claim the agency, led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, altered the registries in a manner that primarily stripped opposition supporters of their voting rights while aiding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Both the central government and the election agency have dismissed the accusations, stating that the list revisions are neutral administrative procedures intended to eliminate duplicate registrations and unqualified names while maintaining valid voters.

Demonstrators, including various opposition groups, youth wings, and members of the Cockroach youth organization, have maintained that Kumar must resign over the issue. Gandhi voiced fierce criticism prior to his detention on Wednesday, telling journalists that protesters intended to occupy the designated site to declare Kumar illegitimate, adding that those responsible for manipulating voter rolls had betrayed the country and that Kumar must leave his post.

Police forces had previously dispersed an opposition gathering headed by Gandhi on Tuesday, briefly detaining participants. Authorities did not provide immediate public comment following Wednesday's arrests.

The confrontation creates fresh political difficulties for Modi during his third term. The current wave of unrest follows previous mass actions coordinated by youth activists that recently compelled the country's education minister to step down over leaked examinations, reflecting broader public frustration with governance, corruption, and employment conditions.
