Meta has unveiled updated artificial intelligence systems designed to identify advertisements and accounts that covertly guide users toward child sexual abuse material hosted elsewhere on the internet.

The social media giant announced the deployment alongside enforcement data showing it addressed 33.2 million instances of child sexual exploitation material across Facebook and Instagram during the first half of 2026. The company stated that proactive automated systems detected more than 97 percent of that content before users flagged it. In India alone, enforcement actions covered 5.3 million pieces of violating content, with proactive detection surpassing 98 percent.

The newest protections focus heavily on a practice known as signposting, where bad actors craft seemingly benign advertisements that serve as gateways to illicit external websites. Because the surface content of these ads frequently complies with standard community guidelines, Meta is using a specialized large language model to analyze the external destinations linked to the promotions. By evaluating where traffic is routed, automated reviewers can ban harmful off-platform destinations and penalize the associated profiles running the campaigns.

To bolster these defenses, Meta is also implementing an automated red-teaming AI agent. The internal evaluation tool acts as an adversarial tester, probing Meta's existing enforcement infrastructure for vulnerabilities that perpetrators might exploit. Meta anticipates this stress-testing approach will allow safety teams to uncover emerging circumvention techniques before they become widespread.

Additional AI scanners have been deployed to surface previously undetected exploitation material, alongside upgraded mechanisms for recognizing repeat offenders who attempt to rejoin platforms using fresh accounts following suspensions.

The safety rollout arrives amid ongoing scrutiny regarding how Meta safeguards minors. Legal and regulatory pressures culminated in an August agreement in which Meta settled a major child safety lawsuit involving 29 U.S. states for up to $18 billion.

Throughout the year, the tech firm has introduced multiple parental oversight features across its product suite. These updates include guardian controls for Meta AI, specialized WhatsApp accounts for preteens, and direct notifications alerting parents if children search for self-harm material on Instagram. In September, WhatsApp expanded these settings further, giving parents options to regulate group invitations, monitor Channel interactions, adjust status privacy, and track specific group activities.
