South Korean President Lee Jae Myung marked the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day on Friday, describing the native Korean alphabet as the nation's face and vital to its identity.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Lee emphasized the deep connection between the writing system and national character, according to Yonhap News Agency. He noted that writing serves as the country's face while language functions as its heart, adding that the vigor of Korea's language and script drives the overall competitiveness of the Republic of Korea.
Hangeul was created in 1443 by King Sejong during the Joseon Dynasty, which governed from 1392 to 1910. The script was officially promulgated three years after its creation to supplement the Chinese-based characters that were widely utilized at the time.
The commemorative day itself traces back to 1926, when it was initiated by the Korean Language Society. During that era, Koreans were living under Japanese colonial rule, which lasted from 1910 to 1945, and activists strived to protect their mother tongue from suppression.
Reflecting on that historical period, Lee highlighted how previous generations committed their full energies to safeguard their language and alphabet. He observed that even after losing their sovereign state, their resolve ensured they did not forfeit their spirit or national identity.
Looking toward modern times, the president pointed to the rising international interest in learning the Korean alphabet. He highlighted the growth of the King Sejong Institute, a cultural institution established in 2007 to teach the language abroad, which has now spread to 89 nations.
Lee concluded that while the preceding century focused on safeguarding Hangeul and establishing its presence in daily life, the coming century will center on broadening its future possibilities.
