Cristiano Ronaldo has unexpectedly left Portugal’s national team training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark, following an apparent disagreement with manager Jorge Jesus.
The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the 41-year-old forward's departure, noting that the remaining 24 players will proceed as scheduled with the Denmark game and an upcoming home match against Norway. The national side must now compete without their captain in matchday three of the tournament.
The abrupt exit occurred after Jesus announced during a news conference that Ronaldo would not be included in the starting lineup against Denmark. Although Jesus stated that the forward would train as normal, and Ronaldo arrived on the team bus at Parken stadium on Wednesday, he never stepped onto the pitch. Video footage emerged showing him departing the stadium with two backroom staff members shortly after the manager spoke to reporters. Spanish media outlet Marca reported that Ronaldo was preparing to fly to Madrid on a private jet.
Shortly after leaving, Ronaldo posted a statement on Instagram explaining that he spoke with the head of the Portuguese Football Federation before choosing to step away. He stated that following the manager's press briefing and the conversation with the federation's president, he chose to depart the camp, adding that he intends to reveal the full reasons behind his decision to the Portuguese public at a later stage while wishing his teammates good luck.
Tensions had reportedly built since Portugal's earlier 2-1 victory over Norway, in which Ronaldo remained an unused substitute throughout the match. Jesus sought to downplay any discord, stating that while Ronaldo had been disappointed not to come off the bench, it was a normal reaction for any player who spent time warming up without entering the match. Jesus also clarified that he had previously informed Ronaldo he would not start and maintained that his tactical choices should not create controversy.
This walkout marks the first time across a 23-year international career that Ronaldo has left Portugal’s squad early. Following the incident, the Portuguese team arrived back at their hotel without both Ronaldo and Jesus, leaving the immediate whereabouts of the manager and player unclear.
The development has raised fresh doubts over Ronaldo's future with the national team. In August, the veteran striker indicated to Vogue magazine that the upcoming year would likely conclude his playing days. Having netted 976 senior goals for both club and country, the forward continues to pursue a 1,000-goal milestone while playing for Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr.
