At least 48 people have been confirmed dead following an armed assault on a remote settlement in northeastern Nigeria, according to police officials speaking to BBC News.

The violent raid occurred in the village of Binnari, situated in Taraba state, shortly after midday Muslim prayers on Friday. Authorities originally recorded 10 fatalities, but the count escalated substantially after search teams discovered additional corpses over the weekend.

Taraba state police spokesperson Victor Mshelizah explained that some of the victims lost their lives in surrounding bushland, while others drowned in an effort to flee the assailants. Rights organisation Amnesty International provided an even higher estimate, stating that contacts within the community and sources on site had confirmed 52 deaths. Isa Sanusi, the director of Amnesty International in Nigeria, noted that 37 individuals were buried during an initial funeral service and called for an independent investigation into the incident.

Witnesses reported that the attackers arrived on roughly 50 motorcycles, carrying two armed riders on each vehicle, and carried out their raid for up to four hours. During the violence, the gunmen torched residential buildings, pillaged local commercial stores for food supplies and cash, and stole motorcycles abandoned by fleeing villagers.

Survivors described chaotic scenes as residents attempted to evade gunfire. Isiyaku Musa, a villager who survived the ordeal, told news agency AFP that people scattered in every direction without knowing where to find shelter. Another local resident indicated that several community members remained unaccounted for in the aftermath.

Police units deployed to the scene following emergency alerts, but the attackers had already departed. Mshelizah stated that while officers managed to disperse the armed men without casualties on either side, the challenging landscape offered an advantage to the perpetrators, who were thoroughly familiar with the area. Security personnel have remained on patrol to stabilise the community.

Northeastern, northwestern, and central regions of Nigeria have suffered persistent unrest driven by armed criminal networks and militant groups. These gangs routinely storm rural towns, seize captives for financial ransom, and destroy property, presenting a major security crisis ahead of national elections scheduled for next year.
