Paris protests turn violent as riot police deploy tear gas and make arrests
Europe correspondent Nick Beake reports from Paris where mostly peaceful protests turned into unrest after nightfall.

French riot police clashed with demonstrators in Paris on Saturday night, deploying tear gas and water cannons after a day of largely peaceful demonstrations escalated into violence.
The disturbances intensified after dark, with individuals in the crowd launching fireworks and other projectiles at security personnel. In response, officers carried out charges to disperse the groups in the capital.
The confrontation formed part of a nationwide mobilization that drew substantial crowds across France for a second straight weekend. Figures from the French Interior Ministry estimated that roughly 400,000 demonstrators participated in Saturday's rallies across the country.
To manage the demonstrations, authorities mobilized approximately 70,000 police officers nationwide. Security forces made nearly 1,000 arrests across the country over the course of the day as unrest broke out in several locations.
According to reporting by the BBC from the French capital, there were few indications on the ground that the wave of public unrest would dissipate quickly. Saturday's events marked another weekend of heightened tension between demonstrators and law enforcement across French cities.
