Malaysia de-registers main opposition bloc Perikatan Nasional as elections loom

Perikatan Nasional's dissolution would mean that its component parties would not be able to contest the upcoming elections under a common banner.

Malaysian authorities have stripped the country's primary opposition alliance, Perikatan Nasional, of its official legal status following deep internal conflicts among its member groups, delivering a major disruption to the coalition just as regional voting approaches.

The Registrar of Societies announced on Tuesday that it cancelled the bloc's registration because its leadership provided inadequate explanations to avert the move. Regulators had warned the alliance last month of potential deregistration and concluded that the coalition failed to counter the formal grounds established for ending its official standing.

The deregistration prevents the alliance's constituent factions, most notably the Islamist party PAS and the Malay nationalist party Bersatu, from competing together under a unified name and symbol. The dispute peaked when Bersatu, headed by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, submitted a complaint to regulators claiming PAS breached alliance rules by shutting it out of an executive council meeting held in July. PAS currently controls the largest single seat share in the 222-seat federal parliament, creating persistent leadership friction with its partner.

The administrative blow arrives ahead of a critical regional ballot in the state of Melaka scheduled for November 14, following earlier provincial setbacks for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Melaka's candidate nominations are slated for October 31, leaving opposition groups little time to determine their campaign branding.

Responding to the decision, coalition secretary-general and PAS senior official Takiyuddin Hassan declared that the alliance will mount a court challenge against the deregistration. Takiyuddin stated that the alliance considers the administrative action a calculated move aimed at undermining opposition contenders ahead of the Melaka contest. According to local reporting, regulators sent a formal notice to the coalition on September 22, the same day Melaka's legislative body was dissolved, and placed the bloc under suspension the next day.

Takiyuddin told local media that the affected parties have not yet settled on which emblem to utilize for the upcoming state contest. The two major partners had previously mounted separate campaigns during regional votes in Johor and Negeri Sembilan despite retaining their formal partnership.

The opposition's disarray comes as Anwar manages tensions within his own ruling setup, which brings together his Pakatan Harapan bloc and the long-established Barisan Nasional coalition led by UMNO. While governing jointly at the federal level, those groups continue to compete against each other regionally. Local reports indicate that Barisan Nasional and PAS have also engaged in discussions regarding potential coordination in Melaka, signaling further realignments across Malaysia's political landscape.
