Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party, has been ordered to serve 15 years behind bars after being convicted of multiple historical sexual offences against children.

The 63-year-old former member of parliament appeared at Newry Crown Court on Thursday to hear his punishment. Judge Paul Ramsey handed down consecutive terms of 11 years for offences committed against one victim and four years for crimes against a second victim. Donaldson was also placed on the sex offender registry for the rest of his life.

Jurors had previously found Donaldson guilty in June on 18 charges, including an allegation of rape. The unlawful behaviour targeted two female victims when they were still youths, spanning a significant timeframe. Donaldson has been detained at Maghaberry Prison since the conclusion of his trial and plans to challenge the convictions on appeal.

During the proceedings, Judge Ramsey observed that Donaldson had experienced a catastrophic fall from public standing. The judge cited multiple aggravating elements, particularly the protracted duration over which the crimes took place, the extreme youth of the victims, and the substantial difference in age between the politician and the children. The court also rejected the idea that a previously clean criminal record should reduce the sentence, pointing out that Donaldson maintained his innocence before investigators, on the witness stand, and during discussions with probation staff.

The politician's spouse, Eleanor Donaldson, had previously been examined through a trial of the facts due to her mental condition. Jurors determined she had carried out the actions underlying five specific counts, including four related to aiding and abetting her partner. While shielded from incarceration, she faces potential court-ordered treatment or a formal discharge, a matter the judge will resolve later. She is also attempting an appeal against that determination.

Police representatives presented statements from both victims following the hearing. One victim explained that the long-term emotional damage persisted well past the end of the abuse, but affirmed that the perpetrators would no longer dictate her life. The second victim described living without security or trust, noting that while nothing could reverse her past, coming forward ensured no further harm could be inflicted on others.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland commended the fortitude of the victims and emphasised that prominence offers no immunity from prosecution. Leaders from the Democratic Unionist Party also responded to the ruling, stating that justice had been achieved and that Donaldson fully warranted every day of his incarceration.

Donaldson served in parliament representing Lagan Valley from 1997 until earlier this year, having led the DUP from 2021 until criminal proceedings commenced in spring 2024. He subsequently lost his knighthood following the guilty verdict.
