Flávio Bolsonaro barred from leaving Brazil following presidential election defeat
Far-right senator banned from leaving country as supreme court judge’s ruling makes reference to money-laundering case The far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro was banned from leaving Brazil and ordered to surrender his passports just hours after his dramatic loss in the presidential election to the leftist president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has barred conservative Senator Flávio Bolsonaro from travelling abroad and demanded the immediate surrender of all his travel documents. The legal directive arrived shortly after Bolsonaro lost the presidential runoff election to incumbent leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The judicial order requires Bolsonaro to yield all passports, including his official diplomatic credential, within 24 hours. The brief decree links the travel restrictions to an active federal police inquiry looking into a suspected financial crime network. Authorities suspect betting enterprises were employed to launder roughly £680 million, and the judge specifically prohibited the senator from communicating with attorney Willer Tomaz, an associate connected to those gambling firms.
Bolsonaro disclosed the development himself via an online video before local news outlets broke the news. He stated that federal officers intercepted him outside the Brasília residence of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, who remains under house arrest. The senator argued the ruling was triggered by public remarks from his brother Eduardo Bolsonaro, who lives in self-imposed exile in the United States and had suggested on a podcast that Flávio leave Brazil if defeated. Flávio insisted he personally harboured no plans to depart the country.
The travel restrictions come at a precarious political moment for the outgoing lawmaker. With his senatorial term concluding early next year, Bolsonaro faces life outside elected office for the first time in 24 years, which will eliminate the privileged legal protections granted to sitting politicians in Brazil. In addition to the money-laundering inquiry, he remains under scrutiny in a separate criminal investigation concerning £20 million he was recorded requesting from an accused banker to finance a film about his father.
Bolsonaro has so far refrained from personally conceding the presidential contest, echoing his father's posture following the election four years earlier. His political party released a formal announcement on Monday evening confirming the outcome certified by electoral authorities, while suggesting lingering concerns still require open political debate.
According to local newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, advisers and legal counsel successfully urged Bolsonaro to abandon a planned legal bid to nullify the election outcome. He had contended that extending voting hours by two hours damaged the vote's integrity, even though his own staff had earlier backed the extension to assist commuters lacking free transit. However, in his video message, Bolsonaro indicated he intended to pursue a separate filing seeking to disqualify Lula's victory over alleged financial misconduct during the campaign.
