Elon Musk says panels formed to study potential Tesla and SpaceX tie-up

Elon Musk said SpaceX and Tesla Inc have formed special committees to explore a potential merger, a preliminary step towards what would rank as the largest corporate tie-up of all time. “I do think there’s a lot of merit to combining the companies,” Musk, the chief executive officer of both companies, said on Tuesday on SpaceX’s earnings webcast. “There’s a lot to be gained from cooperating on developing superintelligence software.” Musk said he is not taking part in the committee discussions...

Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX and Tesla have created special panels to examine a potential consolidation of the two businesses, marking an initial stage toward what could become the biggest corporate merger in history.

Musk, who serves as the chief executive officer of both the aerospace manufacturer and the electric vehicle maker, disclosed the ongoing evaluation during a SpaceX financial results webcast on Tuesday.

Expressing optimism about uniting the enterprises, Musk noted that uniting their resources would present major advantages, particularly in the realm of advanced artificial intelligence technology. He stated that there is significant value in bringing the entities together and working jointly on the creation of superintelligence software.

Despite leading both organizations, Musk clarified that he is deliberately recusing himself from the review process. He explained that his dual roles represent a conflict of interest, preventing him from participating directly in the committee talks.

The exploratory groups have not finalized or agreed upon any formal terms for a potential transaction, according to the announcement. Because discussions remain at an early stage, it is not yet certain whether the panels will ultimately recommend a binding agreement or propose an official structure for the tie-up.

If the initiative moves forward and reaches completion, the combination of the electric vehicle manufacturer and the private rocket firm would represent an unprecedented corporate transaction, reshaping Musk's broader business portfolio under a unified umbrella.
