Samsung Electronics expects its operating profit for the third quarter to reach roughly $80 billion, representing a ninefold increase compared to the same period last year. The massive financial jump highlights the continuing surge in worldwide demand for high-end memory chips essential for running artificial intelligence data infrastructure.

The South Korean technology leader projected that its operating profit for the three months ending in late September will hit 107.4 trillion won, equivalent to about £61 billion. According to BBC News, if confirmed in the full earnings report due later this month, the figures will mark Samsung's fourth consecutive quarter of unprecedented record profits. South Korean corporations typically provide these early estimates to brief the market and investors prior to publishing their comprehensive financial statements.

The rapid expansion of generative AI has produced an extraordinary appetite for sophisticated semiconductors. Alongside competitors such as domestic rival SK Hynix and American chipmaker Micron, Samsung supplies components vital for computing systems manufactured by prominent AI hardware designers like Nvidia. This intense demand has triggered broad semiconductor shortages, granting major producers significant pricing leverage and lifting consumer costs for personal computers and handsets.

Beyond its semiconductor division, the company anticipates an additional lift from its mobile unit following the August release of its newest generation of foldable smartphones. Samsung, which also produces flagship Galaxy devices such as the S26, remains one of the largest smartphone manufacturers globally. The combined strength of its consumer electronics and memory divisions previously drove the company's market valuation beyond the $1 trillion mark earlier in the year.

The earnings forecast comes amid a broader wave of capital spending across the international technology sector. Major American corporations, including Meta, Amazon, and Google, have collectively committed over $650 billion toward artificial intelligence initiatives during the current year. This heavy capital influx has motivated major hardware producers throughout Asia to expand their manufacturing capacity aggressively.

Governments and regional competitors are also committing vast resources to secure supply chains. In June, South Korean authorities introduced an initiative detailing at least $880 billion in domestic manufacturing projects spearheaded by Samsung and SK Hynix. Concurrently, semiconductor firms across Taiwan, Japan, and China continue building out advanced fabrication facilities to meet the growing computing requirements of the AI industry.
